Ranking highlights PUCPR as the only private university in Paraná among the best in the world

Besides Times Higher Education (THE), the institution was also cited on the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR); PUCPR is at the forefront in Paraná and Brazil in terms of “internationalization”.

One of the top international university rankings, the Times Higher Education (THE), recently released the list of the best universities in the world. In addition to being among the 46 Brazilian institutions cited in the survey, the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná (PUCPR) was the only private university in Paraná ranked.

Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE), founded in 2004, provides the list of the best universities in the world. Its methodology was developed after more than a decade of work in consultation with leading universities in the world. To participate in the assessment, higher education institutions must meet a number of requirements.

PUCPR occupies the 13th position at national level and stands out mainly in the indicators: “internationalization” (proportion of foreign students and teachers, as well as international collaboration), citations (international impact of research) and “relationship with industry” (knowledge transfer). Recently, the institution was also cited as one of the best universities in Brazil and in the world, according to the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) list for 2019-2020.

“Good rankings, in internationally prestigious rankings, are the result of the university’s focus on research and the constant pursuit of excellence at the various levels,” said Mrs. Paula Cristina Trevilatto, Pro-Rector of Research, Graduate and Innovation.

INTERNATIONALIZATION

PUCPR stands out in the internationalization category: the institution is ranked 11th nationally and the best one placed among the universities of Paraná.

This is the result of a long-term project: PUCPR took on this challenge when it chose internationalization as a priority, guided by the core values of multiculturalism, inclusion, innovation and supportive community presence. This decision is reflected in the institution’s Internationalization Plan, active since 2016, which lists a number of strategies.

“Making an university more internationalized is not a natural and spontaneous process; on the contrary, it is necessary commitment and resources in order to overcome barriers in a non-Anglophone country, with little tradition of global openness in various sectors of society”, says Marcelo Távora Mira, director of PUCPR International.

“Although MEC (Brazil’s Ministry of Education) currently favors the creation of undergraduate and graduate courses in different experimental models, the reinforcement of the dissemination of the English language – as a factor of international inclusion – and the adoption of a more open attitude towards the international community, will certainly favor the inclusion of Brazil in the world of education without borders ”, concludes Mira.
