Dentistry

The aim of the Graduate Program in Dentistry (PPGO) is the technical-scientific and social education of professionals with a critical and ethical spirit, qualities that guide independent and quality scientific production with benefits to society and human life quality.

Goals

The primary goal of PUCPR’s Graduate Program in Dentistry is to prepare high-quality master’s and doctorates for teaching, research, and management — created to meet the loco-regional and national health demands — through innovative educational, social, and technological impact strategies. The specific goals are as follows:

  1. Train professors who are prepared to adopt didactic-pedagogical practices that encourage the role of students in the development of professional, personal, and social skills.
  2. Train independent researchers focused on the formation of research groups with qualified scientific production and of high socioeconomic impact in line with technological and innovation trends.
  3. Train managers to plan and execute public and private health promotion actions linked to economic, social, political, cultural, and environmental reality.

History

The Graduate Program in Dentistry (PPGO) was created by Resolution No. 12/96, under Opinion No. 15/96-CONSUN, both from PUCPR University Council, dated May 21, 1996. The program began in August 1996 and was a pioneer in Paraná with the Master’s Program in Orthodontics and Facial Orthopedics concentration area. The Ministry of Education, through Ordinance No. 2530, dated September 4, 2002, recognized the Master’s program. In 2004, the Technical-Scientific Council of CAPES Coordination assigned the Program a rating of 4, which allowed the opening of the Doctorate program in 2006. Creating new training areas to meet regional demands for professor training, PPGO currently has Integrated Clinical Dentistry, Biosciences, and Public Health.

Student Profile

The PPGO graduate profile is of an ethical, proactive, collaborative, and sensitive person. The graduates should have high technical and scientific training to work in public and private teaching; national and international higher education as mediators and transforming agents focused on guidance; creation of meanings; and the contextualization of knowledge, beyond the transmission of concepts and definitions. Additionally, the Doctoral student is a professional focused on innovation, knowledge creation, and aptitude to develop innovative research, products, and processes that meet society’s demands. Finally, the graduates’ leadership, global vision, entrepreneurial, and strategic views enable them to manage activities in the public and private sectors.

Program Structure

The PPGO-PUCPR curricular proposal aims to qualify professionals for teaching in the Health field in national and international public and private institutions, as well as to produce and disseminate knowledge in the areas of Dental Clinic, Public Health, and Biosciences. The program’s curriculum proposal consists of working three central training axes interrelatedly and articulating concentration, research areas, and courses, namely:

  • a) Didactic-pedagogical axis, which promotes critical, reflective, and contemporary education related to teaching in Higher Education.
  • b) The scientific axis, which promotes research methodology training, scientific writing, and literature analysis to develop critical thinking and scientific reasoning that culminate in ethical, original, and relevant research for society.
  • c) Social insertion axis, which promotes teaching, research, and extension actions involving the development of practices that contribute to improved teaching (educational impact), public management (social impact health), and vulnerable populations’ life quality (health impact).

The organization of compulsory and optional program courses enables teaching as well as scientific and social training of health professionals in Integrated Clinical Dentistry, Collective Health, and Biosciences and guides scientific production within the program. Research areas relate to the compulsory courses of formal training in the Scientific Axis and optional courses of specific training in the program’s major areas. Compulsory courses are common training and offered to students from all major areas, in the master’s and doctorate programs, enabling the students’ didactic-pedagogical and scientific training. Optional courses allow the students to plan and develop their trajectory in line with their interests under the advising professor’s supervision.

Biosciences

Collective Health

Pathology, diagnosis, and therapy

It aims to study etiopathogenesis, clinical-radiographic, anatomopathological, and molecular aspects of related oral and systemic diseases. Research for diagnostic methods that involve the causes of diseases related to dentistry is involved. Students study therapeutic approaches for the development of clinical procedures involving the evaluation of clinical and laboratory procedures, including non-carious tooth loss; the role of anxiety/stress in oral physiology; epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of malocclusions; oral cancer and potentially malignant lesions; radio/tomographic studies of changes and maxillomandibular injuries and anatomical variations and craniofacial abnormalities; CFFC effectiveness regarding diagnosis and planning in dentistry; osteoporosis and bone quality; influential factors in the orthodontic movement; study of occlusion forces, orthodontic, and orthopedic forces with optical fibers; and clinical and laboratory diagnosis and periodontal disease therapy.

Epidemiology, health promotion, and education

It aims to develop investigations focused on epidemiological importance problems in the health area — especially for chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and maternal and child health, describing and analyzing their impacts on oral health. We work with robust theoretical-methodological approaches, including systematic reviews and transcultural instrument validation, which underpin the critical understanding of social and environmental determinants of health (DSS), common risk factors (FCR) of a social and biological nature, and reflected health inequities. Thus, there is a direction for forming epidemiological evidence and its translation to health services, identifying causal chains, and significant opportunities for intervention to promote health promotion/education. In this line, projects involving educational policies and processes are outlined, with a focus on the investigation of the teaching-learning process that encompasses from elementary school to higher education, including post-graduation. Priority is given to research involving competency learning; innovative teaching/assessment methodologies; learning styles and technical and inter-professional education; health-promoting environments in school spaces and their student impact; training institutions; and society. With this, it focuses on the social production of better health and education practices, positively impacting public policies, planning and management processes, monitoring and evaluation, and the training of competent professionals for teaching, research, and production of health services with standards of excellence

Physical, chemical, and biological properties of dental materials

Research developed in this line involves evaluating and studying the physical-chemical, biological, structural, and surface properties of dental materials and dental structure. Structures of normal and physiologically and pathologically altered dental substrates are evaluated in characterization tests employing microscopy and spectrometry, in addition to their effect on bond strength with adhesive materials, assessed using different resistance tests such as micro-tensile, micro-shear, and push-out. The in vitro, in situ, and in vivo material performance and randomized clinical, case-control, and cohort studies are also included in this Research Area. Development, improvement, and evaluation of techniques and new materials through different laboratory and clinical tests are also carried out and evaluating the degradation and longevity of materials such as ceramics, composites, and polymers reinforced by fibers manufactured with CAD / CAM technology.

Dentistry related to systemic factors

This area of research involves scientific, clinical, and laboratory projects, emphasizing the relationship between oral health and systemic, intrinsic, and extrinsic factors, favoring the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of affected patients. The following topics are covered: stomatological manifestations of diseases and systemic factors; periodontal medicine; hospital dentistry; dentistry related to maternity; exfoliated cytology on the oral mucosa; oral health problems related to chronic systemic diseases/conditions; forensic dentistry; intensive care unit patients; And users of anabolic steroids and illicit drugs.

PPGO laboratories and dental clinics have infrastructure and equipment that assist in developing research projects carried out by masters and doctoral students at PUCPR and other public and private HEIs. Undergraduate students participate in research and undergraduate research projects that require laboratory or contemplate clinical studies. The PUCPR Research Ethics Committee (CEP-PUCPR) is constituted with significant representation from all PUCPR sectors that conduct research, guaranteeing a multi and transdisciplinary composition. Consulted by 34 members, The committee aims to coordinate, unify, and facilitate the ethical evaluation processes of research involving human beings at the institution. Over 300 projects are evaluated annually. CEP-PUCPR is linked to the CEP/CONEP (National Commission for Ethics in Research) system, directly connected to the National Health Council (CNS).

PUCPR’s Ethics Committee on the Use of Animals (CEUA) appreciates research projects and lesson plans that involve creating and using animals for teaching and research activities. CEUA PUCPR has an advisory, educational, and deliberative role on activities that cover animals within PUCPR.

To strengthen the program’s qualified scientific production, PPGO seeks the constant diversification of international cooperation sources through partnerships with research centers that have respected technical and scientific competence.

The partnership between the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná (PPGO) and the University of California in Los Angeles, USA (UCLA) was established through research projects in the areas of stomatology and radiology involving graduate students from both institutions. This partnership has generated an oral presentation at the meeting of the International Association for Dental Research, San Francisco, and the publication of a scientific article in the Dent-Maxillofacial Radiology journal.

International partnerships in the collective health field have generated the development of research and technical cooperation with the Royal Free-University College London and the International Center for Oral Health Inequalities Research & Policy (ICOHIRP), with the publication of the ICOHIRP seminars and ICOHIRP monographs (http: //www.icohirp.com/) by professors. Furthermore, professors collaborate with the International Union of Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE). The project “The First 1000 days in Maternal and Child Health: the COOSMIC Study (Curitiba Maternal and Child Health Cohort)” is developed in partnership with Prof. George Tsakos from the University College of London. The area of endodontics maintains partnerships with professors from the University of Buffalo’s Department of Endodontics in the US, generating several publications of scientific articles in recent years.

PPGO has received masters and doctoral students from other Latin American countries. Through its publications on English and Spanish language websites, the program’s increasing international visibility is responsible for international students seeking quality education in various health areas. Between 2017 and 2019, the program featured students from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Dominican Republic, Syria, and Venezuela, which comprises approximately 10% of the program’s student body.

PPGO carries out international exchange programs systematically through students in sandwich doctorates, international mobility of international students, and technical visits by program professors to universities and research centers in several countries. Professors from international institutions often compose qualification and defense boards.

According to the regulation of the Graduate Program in Dentistry (PPGO) – Academic Master’s and Doctorate, complementary to the Rules for Graduate Master’s and Doctoral programs at PUCPR, Resolution No 21/2014 – CONSUN:

  • After final approval in the Dissertation or Thesis defense, the student must deliver the final version of the approved Dissertation or Thesis to the PPGO secretariat within a maximum period of 60 (sixty) days. , it must be printed in two (2) copies, plus two (2) electronic versions in digital support, destined to the Central Library at PUCPR and another to the PPGO archives.
  • The diploma will be awarded as established in CONSUN Resolution 21/2014.

There are research topics in the program linked to local and national managers’ demands, jointly defined with local health teams and communities according to the need for knowledge that favors decision-making for good health practices. In this sense, dissertations and theses related to topics such as health service management were developed. These topics include evaluation of health care networks; health promotion policies; domestic violence; oral health of vulnerable groups such as drug users; evaluation of local National Programs and Policies, for instance, the National Health Promotion Policy and the School Health Program; and the evaluation of the Model of Attention to Chronic Conditions in Primary Health Care.

Professors from the Public Health Area of PPGO, coordinating members of the National Epidemiological Survey – SB Brazil 2010, of the Collaborating Center for Oral Health Surveillance of the Ministry of Health, have produced dissertations/theses and publications that affect the epidemiological knowledge of the area and organizational arrangements for public oral health services.

PPGO/PUCPR professors produced a detailed report to the Municipal Health Department of Curitiba, which supported a reformulation of programmatic strategies and clinical care practices, based on epidemiological evidence from the Survey. During the 2017-2018 period, a new protocol was implemented with the collaboration of program researchers for implantation of the Oral Health Network (RAS Buccal Curitiba), seeking changes in the work processes of the Oral Health Teams of Primary Health Care (http://www.saude.curitiba.pr.gov.br/programas.html).

Concurrently, at the state level, professors and students from the program have participated in the formulation and implementation of the Paraná State Oral Health Care Network, with its respective Guide Line (http://www.saude.pr.gov.br/modules/ conteudo / conteudo.php? conteudo = 3027), which has been discussed in the state health macro-regions, reaching most of the 399 municipalities in Paraná. In a subproject, resulting from this technical consultancy with the State Secretariat, researchers in the Collective Health area developed the topic, “Atraumatic restorative treatment in primary care and its impact on children’s quality of life from different regions of Paraná.” It received support from the PPSUS notice and collaboration from PUCPR with the State Universities of Maringá (UEM) and Ponta Grossa (UEPG).

In partnership with the Curitiba Mother Care Network, with Curitiba mayor’s office, the PPGO Public Health Area started the study of COOSMIC – Curitiba Maternal and Child Health Cohort in 2017. This study aims to explore aspects of children’s health during their first 1,000 days of life, from gestation to two years of age, based on the monitoring and multidisciplinary care of pregnant women linked to the “Mãe Curitibana” Program.

The multi-professional research group involves researchers, undergraduate, and graduate students from the dentistry, nutrition, physiotherapy, pharmacy, physical education, and psychology programs at PUCPR’s School of Life Sciences. Additionally, professionals from the healthcare network in Curitiba produced knowledge used for the qualification and management of maternal and child health care policies in the Municipal System, as well as providing feedback for further research in this field. Throughout 2018, a Multidisciplinary Institutional Support Steering Committee PUCPR/SMS-Curitiba — with the support of a researcher from the University of London and subsidies obtained from technical visits to the Federal University of Pelotas and the Regional University of Blumenau — trained 52 supervisors/interviewers in fieldwork and guidance for pregnant women and their families. To date, 90 pregnant women are part of the pilot study sample and have been monitored by the team.

Research projects in stomatology have been developed at the oncology center at Santa Casa de Curitiba Hospital. As part of these projects, dental care for patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy was instituted to prevent the adverse effects of treatment and promote their oral health. Consequently, cancer patients began being referred to the PUCPR Dental Clinic before starting chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Another project has been developed with the dentistry service of the Cajuru University Hospital (HUC) to assist inwards and ICUs patients to enable prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of oral and dental conditions and diseases, improving patients’ quality of life during their hospital stay. Also, a standard operating procedure (SOP) for oral hygiene of patients admitted to the ICU at Marcelino Champagnat, and Universitário Cajuru Hospitals was developed by a PPGO master’s student, contributing to the standardization of hospital oral hygiene. PPGO offers the Doctoral course, “Clinic for Attending the Systemically Compromised Patient (CAOSC),” intended to carry out research and care for a) HIV-positive patients and those at risk of exposure to the virus; b) those referred by the Guidance and Counseling Center of the Municipal Health Secretariat of Curitiba (COA); and c) oncological, syndromic patients with systemic diseases referred by specialized hospitals due to oral manifestations. In association with treatment, patients have received guidelines for the promotion of oral health, as well as interventions aimed at the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of oral and dental conditions and diseases related to systemic diseases.

PPGO students and professors annually participate in national and international research conferences, primarily the SBPqO (Brazilian Society of Dental Research) and IADR (International Association for Dental Research) conferences. Below are some records of these conferences’ participation.

  • Participation of professors and students in the Brazilian Society of Dental Research (SBPqO) conference in 2019

  • Participation of master’s student, Jordano Quearis de Almeida, as a presenter of panel work and his supervisors Prof. Everdan Carneiro and Prof. Renata Werneck at the International Association for Dental Research conference in Vancouver in 2019

  • Participation of PPGO student, Hiromi Saisho, presenting her dissertation work at the International Association for Dental Research conference in Vancouver in 2019

– Popularization of Science and Dissemination

The main programs for the popularization of science in the PPGO are the Scientist at School, Healthy Coastal Project, and Planeta PUCPR projects. The Scientist at School project is an initiative of the Education Secretariat of the City of Curitiba, attended by PPGO students from the three major areas. Projeto Litoral is a short program of the Collective Health Discipline of the Dentistry Course at PUCPR in conjunction with the city of Matinhos (coast of Paraná) and the participation of doctoral students from the Collective Health area of PPGO. These students organize workshops in orthodontics, dentistry, and stomatology during the annual Planeta PUCPR event, which is a course for high school students.

Scientist Project at the Municipal Secretariat of Education School (Topic: Discovering Epidemiology), developed by doctoral students in the Public Health and Biosciences area at the PPGO-PUCPR at the Municipal School Guilherme Lacerda Braga Sobrinho.

Since 2011, PUCPR has engaged in a project called Excellence in Stricto Sensu that is aimed at internationalizing the institution’s programs to achieve maximum scores of 6 and 7 and to promote transdisciplinarity and innovation in different areas of knowledge, especially in its strategic areas. The PIBIC master program is one its greatest differentials (it allows talented students to attend both undergraduate and graduate stricto sensu programs and develop part of their research in a highly qualified foreign institution) as well as being in harmony with society and focusing on innovation.

The institution must also be constantly attentive to the changing needs of the society, with alignment/realignment to the CAPES criteria and oriented to develop internationally, having internationalization as its main guide in the search for quality in teaching and research.

Every graduate program must meet the criteria set by their corresponding committee; therefore, each program strategic planning and operating criteria needs to be done accordingly.

Criteria for each area need to be discussed within the program annually so that all necessary and appropriate corrective actions can be taken during the four-year period. Each program is committed to structuring and readjusting its strategic planning annually in search of excellence. In addition, the programs are encouraged to rethink their lines of research in order to adapt to the rapid changes that may occur in international and national scenarios.

This graduate program’s dynamism and flexibility must always meet quality criterion both in master’s and doctoral training and in the development of research and innovation, essentially aiming at the improvement of society. Thus, an annual review of each program strategic planning is requested that contains the topics below at a minimum:

  • i. Mission and vision of the program;
  • ii. Summarized annual opinion produced by an external evaluator; the annual evaluation by an external member is an institutional practice conducted since 2006, which allows for the annual performance of each program to be assessed according to the area criteria;
  • iii. Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and risks (preparation of a SWOT matrix showing external and internal factors) considering the goals for the current and next four years;
  • iv. Goals (measurable objectives) established for the consolidation and development of strengths and improvement of weaknesses;
  • v. Actions (processes) necessary to achieve the objectives, people in charge, and monitoring instruments; in this topic, the coordinator and the institution should get involved to consider resizing the faculty and the student body, criteria for accreditation/re-accreditation, infrastructure, selection process, strategies to increase fundraising, and citations and innovation, among other items;
  • vi. Preliminary text of the program’s self-assessment describing the last four years containing at least the following information: stages of the self-assessment process; analysis of results and achievement of objectives; necessary actions for its consolidation and internationalization;

The IDP (Institutional Development Plan) document presents the strategic plans of all the programs aligned with the institutional planning, containing the Mission, Vision, SWOT Matrix, Canvas, and road map, and providing information on the needs and intentions of the programs for the 2017–2020 and 2021–2024 quadrennium of the CAPES evaluation.
